Top questions regarding the UNT publications policy

In presenting the UNT identity to the general public and prospective students, consistency is the key. The university seal, wordmark, spirit markers and stationery - and guidelines for their use - were created with that thought in mind. The following are the most frequently asked questions regarding the UNT publications policy (7.1).

1) How do I access UNT marks online?

Go to www.unt.edu/images to download images for the web and for print. If you use low-resolution, web-only images in your print documents, they will appear with jagged edges. Please use the print versions of the UNT marks for your word-processing documents.

2) May I create my own letterhead and business cards for my center, institute, department, etc.?

All university colleges, schools, departments, divisions, offices, centers, institutes, units and subunits are required to use the standard university letterhead design and to follow other guidelines in the university publications policy. Units that are not funded by UNT and can exist on their own without university support are not bound by the policy. You may call grants accounting in Research Services at 565-3940 if you are unsure of the funding status of your group.

3) May I use the university seal for an invitation, plaque or certificate for a faculty or staff member who is retiring?

Use of the university seal is limited, but these commemorative, limited-distribution items qualify under the publications policy. (Section 6C of the policy lists appropriate uses of the seal.) However, all uses of the seal must be pre-approved by the university art director in Public Affairs and Information Services, 565-2108.

4) May I make the UNT wordmark smaller and my office name bigger and bolder on university letterhead?

All university colleges, schools, departments, divisions, offices, centers, institutes, units and subunits are required to use the standard university letterhead design. University letterhead is the most frequently used form of communication from UNT to the general public and prospective students. For this reason, it is important that all university letterhead be consistent in presenting the UNT identity.

5) Do I have to use the UNT wordmark on T-shirts for my office or department or on T-shirts and literature for the student organization I advise?

The publications policy does not require UNT marks to appear on clothing, but most offices and departments choose to use UNT marks to show their support. This helps maintain a consistent institutional image. When UNT marks are used, they must appear in their designated colors and with the appropriate trademark or registered trademark symbol (™ or ®). See policy sections 6A, 6B and 7 for official colors and trademark symbols. Student organizations are not required to follow the publications policy, but most like to show their support of UNT and unity with the university by including UNT marks on their promotional items. The same rules should be followed as when using UNT marks for offices and departments.

6) Do I need to get university approval to create a logo or brochure for my department, office, center, etc.?

The university does not require any department or group to get approval prior to production of a logo or publication, but it is up to the department creating such items to ensure that they contain accurate information and follow the UNT publications policy. The university wordmark must be on the front of all UNT publications. It is important to note that individual logos created for offices, centers, departments, etc., may be used only as artwork on publications and not as official university logos.

7) May I create a logo for my department, center, etc., incorporating one of the UNT logos?

All UNT marks (including the wordmark) are trademarks or registered trademarks and cannot be incorporated into other logos. These stand alone to represent UNT as a whole. There are three service centers on campus to assist you in creating a custom logo. The centers are Center for Media Production, 565-2180; Printing Services, 565-2005; and Union Design Works, 565-3831.

8) I serve as treasurer for a professional organization. The funds are managed through UNT, and I want Printing Services to print our newsletter. Does the university wordmark have to be printed on the newsletter?

As long as the account number is a 90,000 series and above, the wordmark is not required. These are outside agency funds managed by the university.

9) What is the font of the UNT wordmark, so I can set it myself?

The UNT wordmark has been carefully crafted to create a unique and collegiate logo for the university. Do not set it yourself. It is downloadable as a graphic for placement in your document at www.unt.edu/images.
