Take precautions when using space heaters
Chilly
temperatures continue in Texas, and the cold weather may have some faculty
and staff wishing for a way to help warm up their offices.
Though
UNT does not have a formal policy addressing the use of space heaters,
Risk Management and Environmental Services follows a procedure regarding
their use.
All space
heaters must be approved by Risk Management before they are used. The
following are space heater use requirements:
- all
space heaters must be UL
Underwriters Laboratories
listed. Underwriters Laboratories listed equipment will bear the letters UL
or will have a small green tag;
- heaters
must have a device to automatically turn the equipment off and sound
an alarm if the heater tips over;
- heaters
are not to be used with extension cords;
- heaters
are not to be left unattended at any time while in operation;
- heaters
should not be placed under a desk or in any other confined space or
where any flammable item could come in contact with the equipment.
For heater
approval, contact Risk Management and Environmental Services at 565-2109.
In most cases, only electric heaters will be allowed.
