JOHN L.'JACK' BAIER, professor of counseling, development and higher education, launched a new journal titled College Student Services Journal of Research and Practice. It is published every fall and spring.

BOB BLAND, professor and chair of public administration, and WES CLARKE, associate professor of public administration, co-wrote "State Income Tax and Local Government Borrowing Cost Revisited," published in the Municipal Finance Journal, summer 2003, vol. 24, no. 2.

BRUCE BOND, professor of English, read a selection of his poetry at Texas Woman's University, Nov. 3 in Denton, and at The Writer's Garret, Nov. 21 in Dallas.

CYNTHIA CHANDLER, professor of counseling, development and higher education, presented "The History of Animal Assisted Therapy" at the First International Symposium on the Human Animal Bond and provided post-conference workshops, Nov. 2-4 in Seoul, South Korea. She also spoke with students and professors at Cheju University, Nov. 9-11 in Jeju, South Korea. While she was there, she trained and certified the first two animal-assisted therapy teams in South Korea.

Shobhana ChelliahSHOBHANA CHELLIAH, associate professor of English, presented "Subjectification of Semantic Role Marking" at the Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics, Nov. 10 in Dallas.

GAIL LIPPINCOTT, assistant professor of English, presented "Promoting Women as 'Instructive Inspectors': Ellen Swallow Richards and the Authority of Scientific Knowledge," at the fourth biennial Feminism(s) and Rhetoric(s) Conference, Oct. 23-25 at Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.

WALTON MUYUMBA, assistant professor of English, wrote a book review of On the Ropes, published Nov. 2 in Washington Post Book World.

JOHN R. 'HAJ' ROSS, professor of English, discussed "Wallace Stevens and the Western Intellect" at the South Branch of the Denton Public Library, Dec. 10 in Denton.

Pohl, OSCAR N. GARCIA, professor of computer science and engineering and dean of the College of Engineering, and the university's new Center for Advanced Research and Technology are mentioned in the "2003: Year in Review" feature of the Denton Record-Chronicle on Jan. 1.

Bernard WeinsteinBERNARD WEINSTEIN, professor of applied economics and director of the University Center for Economic Development and Research, appeared on WFAA-TV Channel 8 News at 10 p.m. Dec. 19 voicing his views on retail sales and the economic outlook. Weinstein discusses Texas job growth in the Dec. 22 issue of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and offers his views on area dot-com businesses in the Dec. 29 issue. An article he wrote on the 10th anniversary of the North American Free Trade Agreement appears in the Jan. 4 issue.

Local

GREG FORTE, custodial area supervisor in facilities, is the subject of a Dec. 26 article in the Denton Record-Chronicle that explores his dual roles as a UNT employee and a minister.

BILL MERCER, adjunct in radio, television and film, performed the role of Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol on KNTU 88.1. The 90-minute radio drama was broadcast at 9 p.m. Dec. 14 and repeated at 9 p.m. Dec. 24 and 6 p.m. Christmas day.

ELIDA TAMEZ, advancement associate in the Office of Development, comments on matching donations in a Jan. 5 Denton Record-Chronicle article about JOHN MURPHY, associate professor of music, who ran in a December marathon to raise funds for music department scholarships.

DARLENE WENGERT, lecturer in kinesiology, health promotion and recreation, offers details of the popularity of fencing in the Jan. 8 Denton Record-Chronicle.

Glen HauboldGLEN HAUBOLD, utilities services manager in facilities, and MORGAN O'DONNELL, former administrative assistant in the School of Library and Information Sciences, were awarded the "Competent Toastmaster" certification by Toastmasters International in November and recognized for the achievement at a North Texas Toastmasters meeting Dec. 15. They each presented and received evaluations for 10 speeches over the course of a year.

VIVIAN LONG, 86, senior library clerk from 1963 to 1976, died Dec. 30 in Lewisville. She was born in Hominy, Okla., and worked as the secretary to the director of the libraries at North Texas. Survivors include her sons, Richard Long of Lewisville and Pat Long of Denton; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Jan. 3 at Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home. Burial was in Roselawn Memorial Park.
