Rafes named senior vice president for administration

Richard Rafes has been named UNT senior vice president for administration a reformulated position that assumes the duties of the previous vice president for administrative affairs and includes the responsibility of aiding in the operations of the Office of the President. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the UNT System Board of Regents.

Equity, diversity conference registration deadline nearing

Improving cultural competency and work force diversity in universities, workplaces and communities are major goals of the sixth annual Equity and Diversity Conference. The conference, titled "Multicultural Students, Staff and Faculty: Culturally Competent Leaders in Education, the Workplace and the Community," takes place Feb. 6-7 in the University Union.

Pohl addresses golf course development issue

As UNT moves forward in its plans to use the golf course to accommodate the university's growth, it is increasingly mindful of the plans' effect on the surrounding neighborhood.

I met with a 10-member neighborhood committee Jan. 17 to discuss the issues and to hear residents' concerns about our plans. We will now begin working with them to mitigate the plans' impact on the neighborhood.

UNT offers support system to employ people with disabilities

According to the National Council on Disability, two-thirds of Americans with disabilities remain unemployed, despite being fully capable of working. The council also says that unemployment rates for people with disabilities are higher than those for any group in the country, even in the difficult current economic times.

Rafes speaks to Staff Council about salaries, staffing levels, legislative session

The UNT Staff Council heard a report from Richard Rafes, senior vice president for administration, Jan. 8 regarding a council resolution calling for greater consideration for staff salaries and staffing levels.

UNT to sponsor Leadership Texas participant

Each year UNT sponsors one woman's participation in Leadership Texas, a yearlong program dedicated to helping women leaders network and make strides in the professional world. This year UNT will sponsor Nancy McCray, assistant director for the Office of System and University Planning, covering the cost of her participation.

Artist Wenda Gu's exhibit features a large temple structure, made entirely of human hair, including massive pillars that are lighted from within. More photos are on the Bulletin Board page of this issue of InHouse.

Gu creates new installation during residency

Internationally renowned artist Wenda Gu spent a weeklong artist's residency at UNT earlier this month with the support of nearly $50,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
