Faculty masterpieces — Portraits by Robert Jessup, associate professor of visual arts, are among the items on display at the annual Faculty Exhibition in the UNT Art Gallery on the first floor of the Art Building. The last week of the exhibit, which features works in various media by School of Visual Arts faculty, is Jan. 12-17. Gallery hours are Monday and Tuesday, noon-8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, noon-5 p.m.

HARRY BENSHOFF, assistant professor of radio, television and film, co-wrote America on Film: Representing Race, Class, Gender and Sexuality in the Movies, Blackwell Publishing, 2003.

DAVID McENTIRE, assistant professor of public administration and emergency administration and planning, co-wrote "Epistemological Problems in Emergency Management: Theoretical Dilemmas and Implications," published in the Journal of the American Society of Professional Emergency Planners, vol. 10.

MICHAEL McGUIRE, associate professor of public administration, received the Louis Brownlow Book Award for 2003 at the National Academy of Public Administration conference, Nov. 21 in Washington, D.C. The award was for a book he co-wrote, Collaborative Public Management: New Strategies for Local Governments, Georgetown University Press, 2003.

SAM SAULS, associate professor of radio, television and film, attended the 15th annual Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation Faculty Seminar, Nov. 4-8 in Hollywood. He was one of 20 college and university faculty members from across the nation selected to attend the seminar.

UNT President NORVAL POHL discussed the new frontier of nanotechnology on the 10 p.m. broadcast of WFAA-TV Channel 8 Dec. 3.

Bernard WeinsteinBERNARD WEINSTEIN, professor of applied economics and director of the University Center for Economic Development and Research, was interviewed on the Glenn Mitchell radio show on KERA-FM radio Dec. 5. The one-hour interview focused on the economic outlook for the nation and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He also appeared in FOX-Channel 4 TV news stories on economic recovery Dec. 10 at 6 and 10 p.m. and Dec. 11 at 5:30 a.m. He offered his forecast for Dallas-Fort Worth-area job growth in the Dec. 16 Dallas Morning News. He remarks on the economy in a Dec. 13 Dallas Morning News story about a Grapevine resort opening in April.

Local

MIKE ASHBAUGH, assistant athletic director of business operations, and FRED POLE, retired vice president for administrative affairs and vice chancellor for administration, comment on the football team's traveling to New Orleans in the Nov. 8 Denton Record-Chronicle.

ABRAHAM BENAVIDES, assistant professor of public administration, notes the importance of an education, especially for Hispanic youth, in the Nov. 8 Denton Record-Chronicle.

MICHELLE HALE, InHouse editor, and her husband, Bryan, welcomed a baby girl, Madeleine Rush Hale, on Oct. 29 at Medical Center Lewisville. Madeleine weighed 7 pounds and was 19 inches long.

W. James DavidsonW. JAMES DAVIDSON, 82, Professor Emeritus of English who was at North Texas from 1954 to 1986, died Dec. 17 in Fort Worth. He was a pilot in World War II, serving in Hawaii and the Philippines. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Utah and his doctorate from New York University.

He was a writer of both creative and scholarly works as well as a painter and a pianist. He was chair of the American Association of University Professors and was instrumental in moving forward resolutions for equal pay for women faculty.

He was well known for walking to work, a round trip of 10 miles a day between his Denton home and UNT. He was also a lifeguard, tennis player, horseman and mountain climber.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; two sons, Kevin James and Nathanael Arthur; and one granddaughter.

A private graveside service was held Dec. 20.
