UNT community's donations make the holidays brighter

The university community spread some holiday cheer during annual drives managed by the human resources department and the University Program Council.

The food and toy drives sponsored by the human resources department benefit the Denton Community Food Center and the Denton Police Department's Silent Santa program.

This marked the second year that food items were donated to the Denton Community Food Center in both November and December. To help local families during Thanksgiving and to restock the center for the December holiday season, the university community donated 14,809 pounds of food.

The Denton Police Department's Silent Santa program, which is held at the Cumberland Children's Home, allows local needy families to choose donated toys for children in their family. The UNT community contributed 1,185 toys to the program.

In addition, $95 was collected in the food and toy drives.

The University Program Council sponsored its annual Salvation Army Adopt an Angel Tree, with gift requests from children and teen-agers ages 4 to 16. UNT community members provided gifts for more than 40 angels.

Many departments and organizations found creative ways to collect food, toys and money while spreading UNT spirit along the way. The University Union held a concert, "3 Bands for 3 Cans," in which the only cover charge was three cans of food. The Union also raised money by collecting donations in exchange for servings of bread pudding to celebrate the Mean Green's trip to the New Orleans Bowl.
