Three honored for 40 years
of service to university
At the annual Service Recognition Awards ceremony Dec.
9, 361 faculty and staff members were honored for more than 4,920 years
of combined service to the university.
Three individuals were recognized for 40 years of service each. They
received brass and pewter plates as well as individual gifts.
- John
Ed Allen, associate professor of mathematics, joined the
math faculty
in 1963 and was chair of the Department of Mathematics for 23 years,
from 1976 to 1999. Since 2002, Allen has served as assistant
dean and director of academic programs for the Texas Academy of Mathematics
and Science. An avid gardener, he received a gift certificate to
Four Seasons, and a contribution was made to an already established
endowed
scholarship in his honor.
- Richard Harris,
associate vice president for computing and
information technology,
arrived at North Texas several years before his 1963 hire
date. As a master's student in mathematics, he worked part time
as a student programmer in the Computing Center before being hired full
time. For years he was the youngest computing center director in the
state. In recognition of his 40 years of service, an endowed UNT scholarship
was established in his honor to benefit UNT freshmen entering the information
sciences fields.
- Bob Way, instructor
in kinesiology, health promotion and
recreation, played guard and linebacker
on the North Texas 1956 freshman football
team and went on to compete in the 1959 Sun Bowl. He coached part time
while finishing his master's degree and became a full-time offensive
line coach in 1963. In addition to coaching and teaching, he has coordinated
operations in the Physical Education Building and the Men's Gym.
He was given a gift certificate to Oshman's and a certificate to
play golf at Tour 18.
