Implementation of Academic Plan begins

The Academic Planning Council, an 18-member committee charged with making sure the university's academic plan is implemented, is making appointments to three subcommittees responsible for moving the Academic Plan from theory into practice.

Strategic Plan and Responsibility Center Management

In April 2004, the Board of Regents requested that a five-year Strategic Plan be developed. The board worked with a consultant to gather extensive input from the university community and define the type of institution that UNT wishes to become by 2011.

Clean sweep — Groundskeeper Robert Estridge blows debris from the surface of the primary spirit mark recently installed in the new Grace Cartwright Library Plaza, located in the Willis Library mall area.

UNT officials are exploring opportunities for a partnership with the Denton ISD and a large private corporation in hopes of making a high-quality childcare center available for the children of faculty, staff and students.

Richard Rafes, senior vice president for administration, says he expects the outside parties to determine by Aug. 1 if they will move forward in establishing a joint child-care facility with UNT. If a partnership is established, officials will turn their attention to determining the size of the facility and how to develop and manage the programming there.

Summer benefits enrollment begins July 25

Between July 25 and Aug. 19, UNT   employees have the opportunity to add or make changes to certain benefit packages, including TexFlex Dependent Care and Health Care Reimbursement accounts, the State Kids Insurance Program, HealthSelect medical insurance, dental plans and several life and disability insurance packages.

Two UNT music students earn Fulbright grants to fund international study

Two College of Music students will leave in September for their studies abroad as recipients of Fulbright grants, which are among the nation's most prestigious awards for international graduate study.

Growing green — The landscaped area surrounding UNT's Goolsby Chapel was named the Water-smart yard of the month for July. The area is maintained by (from left) Joe Villarreal, Jon Harper, Virak Sann and Patrick Tharp, all of housing maintenance. The area uses native plants and xeriscaping to reduce irrigation needs.

Sunday Fun Day volunteers needed

About 600 volunteers are needed to help students move into UNT's residence halls during Sunday Fun Day on Aug. 21. Faculty and staff, as well as members of their families, are encouraged to participate.

Murphy Enterprise Center awards $30,000 to UNT students with winning business plans


E-Opportunity — a company created by two UNT students that creates Internet strategies and web sites for new, small and growing businesses — claimed the top prize last month in the first New Venture Creation Contest sponsored by UNT's Murphy Enterprise Center.

Nineteen students earn Mayborn scholarships

UNT's Frank W. Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism awarded $190,000 in scholarships to students for the 2005-06 academic year. Nineteen students, all pursuing master's degrees in journalism, will each receive $10,000.
