North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts

What comes to mind when you think about your elementary school art classes? Making hand turkeys in November, rolling clay between your hands to make the longest snake possible, or trying to paint a pretty picture? That's what art was like for many of us when we were little.

At the North Texas Institute for Educators on the Visual Arts, we think art instruction can be about so much more. NTIEVA is a consortium of art museums, K-12 schools, area arts agencies and UNT's School of Visual Arts. NTIEVA was established in 1988 through a grant from the J. Paul Getty Trust and is one of six national institutes that are part of a national reform movement in art education.

The institutes are devoted to research and development in the theory and practice of comprehensive art education. Children interpret meaning from works of art, examine the historical context and philosophical base of the works, and, of course, create art.

NTIEVA also administers the Marcus Fellows Program in art education graduate study, allowing teachers and museum educators to further their leadership capabilities as comprehensive art educators.
