City of Dallas helps UNT secure funding The Dallas City Council, at its June 28 meeting, authorized the city manager to secure up to $3 million from public and private sources to help build the UNT System Center at Dallas into a full university. The funds will be used to purchase approximately 200 acres and/or provide infrastructure in the I-20 corridor of southern Dallas that eventually will become the site for a University of North Texas at Dallas. Preparing football stadium for season is no easy task Football players shed a lot of sweat and spend countless hours practicing to prepare for the first game of the season. But don't underestimate the amount of work and time that go into preparing Fouts Field for the big event. The UNT opera theatre will perform its first summer opera July 28 to 30 in the Lyric Theater of UNT's Murchison Performing Arts Center. The performances, which begin at 8 p.m. July 28 and 29 and at 3 p.m. July 30, feature a full staging of Puccini's most successful one-act opera, Gianni Schicchi, combined with a concert presentation of the second act of Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci. Eubank to fill interim post in graduate school
Eubank will replace Sandra Terrell, professor of speech and hearing sciences, who is leaving UNT for a year to participate in the American Council on Education Fellows Program. She will return to campus for the Fall 2001 semester.
Ferring named
chair of geography department Reid Ferring, a professor of geography, will assume leadership of the Department of Geography in August, replacing longtime chair Andrew Schoolmaster, who is returning to the faculty. Housing department wins national diversity award The UNT Department of Housing and Residence Life received the National Commitment to Diversity Award at the recent National Association of College and University Residence Halls national conference. Uswachoke grants distributed to faculty This summer UNT has awarded $44,570 in 2000-01 Charn Uswachoke International Developmental Fund Grants to 10 faculty members in schools and departments throughout the university.
New director of UNT Press named Ronald Chrisman, acquisitions editor for the University of Oklahoma Press, has been named director of the UNT Press. His appointment is effective Sept. 1. Chrisman replaces Frances Vick, who has served as director of the UNT Press since helping to establish it in 1987. Vick is retiring from the university. Researchers study teams, leadership How has the popularity of using a team approach in the workplace affected corporate leadership? UNT researchers are seeking to answer that question and to profile leadership effectiveness within individual companies. UNT's Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Analysis is offering free feedback to companies across the nation with 100 or more employees. Outreach program teaches sewing skills Thanks to UNT, residents of the Phoenix Apartments, a public housing complex administered by the Denton Housing Authority, are learning sewing skills that could result in future income. The sewing group at the Phoenix Apartments is just one of several outreach projects that the UNT Center for Public Service is conducting at low-income apartment communities through its Healthy Neighborhoods program.
Wells serves as naval school superintendent for summer Richard Wells, UNT professor of journalism, has been appointed superintendent of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., for the summer.
