UNT President Norval Pohl was named outstanding college president by the All-American Football Foundation at a banquet held in Dallas in June. "This award is important because it symbolizes that athletics at this university are important. They give me another way to tell people about our university," Pohl says. "It has always been my belief that the academic progams at North Texas are far better than most people realize, and by elevating awareness of the university through athletics, we are given another window through which we can showcase the quality of our overall university." Pohl was nominated for the award by Rick Villarreal, athletic director for the university. "First and foremost, he rallied the students and got them involved not only in athletics, but also in other campus activities," Villarreal says. "He made it known that he wanted to try to bring athletics to a high standard. He wanted the students to play at the same level on the field as was already being done in the classroom." The AAFF is a national organization of more than 150 collegiate members. Founded in 1994, the organization was established to honor individuals in all aspects of football and raise funds for scholarships.
