Craft named to Board of Regents Texas Gov. George W. Bush has appointed Marjorie B. Craft of DeSoto to the UNT Board of Regents. Craft's term will end May 22, 2001. She is completing the unfinished term of Joe Kirven of Dallas, who resigned. The Texas Senate must confirm the appointment. Craft, a Dallas independent business consultant and UNT alumna, has assumed her new responsibilities and will participate in the next regularly scheduled board meeting Aug. 24 and 25 at the UNT System Center at Dallas.
System Center expansion adds rooms, technology The UNT System Center will complete construction of the second part of its facility by the first day of fall classes, Aug. 28. The addition will bring 44,000 square feet of new space for classrooms and offices to the center. UNT impact expected to reach $1 billion During 2000, UNT will generate more than $880 million in economic activity in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and support 16,000 jobs. Projections of growth, budget and enrollment predict a total economic impact of $1 billion by UNT in fiscal year 2001, according to an economic analysis conducted by Terry Clower and Bernard Weinstein of the UNT Center for Economic Development and Research. Recent System Center donations exceed $1 million UNT has been awarded more than $1 million in recent gift commitments to fund activities, equipment, operations and programs at the UNT System Center at Dallas. The donors are 3M Austin, $19,000; American Airlines, $180,000; AT&T Foundation, $150,000; Chase Bank of Texas, N.A., $125,000; Coca Cola Enterprises, $25,000; GTE Foundation, $250,000; Hoblitzelle Foundation, $100,000; Lancaster Economic Development Corp., $10,000; Oak Farms Dairy, $20,000; Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable and Educational Trust, $100,000; and Trammell Crow Dallas-Fort Worth, $25,000. UNT recognized for fund-raising efforts UNT has been selected for a 2000 Circle of Excellence in Educational Fund-Raising Award by the Council of Advancement and Support of Education. CASE will present the award to university officials at its International Assembly in Toronto on July 14.
The university catalog released this month begins a new tradition at UNT. Catalog cover designs are now being chosen by students attending Freshman Orientation. Conference on access is planned The UNT System Center at Dallas will be the site of the fourth Student Access to Higher Education Conference from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 21. The conference is a result of a partnership of the Texas A&M University System, the Dallas County Community College District and the UNT System. Both university systems and the community college district are seeking to increase enrollment, retention and graduation rates for underserved populations.
Photos document pollution effects A traveling photo exhibit that illustrates the possible effects of pollution on residents of an East Texas town is now on display at UNT. The exhibit by photographer Tammy Cromer-Campbell, "Fruit of the Orchard: Pollution, Environmental Justice and Social Responsibility," will run through July 28 at the Eagle Exhibit Hall in the Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building. UNT helps Intel train teachers UNT is one of five agencies selected to coordinate part of a multimillion-dollar international Teach to the Future project designed to enhance the way teachers use technology in the classroom. Intel Corp., a leading manufacturer of computer processors, hopes to train 100,000 master teachers within 1,000 days through grants awarded to coordinating agencies and school districts, says Lemoyne Dunn, Intel's Teach to the Future project coordinator for UNT.
