Janet Trepka, coordinator of new student and mentoring programs, says New Student Orientation is designed to get incoming freshmen off to a good start in their new academic surroundings. At orientation they learn about campus life, get acquainted with new friends and get registered for the fall semester. The first day of each orientation session begins with check-in at Kerr Hall. For the next two nights, incoming freshmen get their first taste of residence hall living. Events over the three-day period include an activities mart, at which they can meet representatives from more than 50 student organizations; an issues and expectations meeting that will include discussions on topics ranging from dorm living to academic expectations; and Play Fair, an entertaining way for them to meet their fellow freshmen. While the students are learning about college life, their parents will be busy learning their new role, attending sessions that discuss paying for college, student life and future expectations. They also join their children for several events, including a services fair, a meal in Kerr Hall and a host of seminars.
