UNT to receive about $4 million in general revenue funds from the state of Texas

After 140 days, the Texas Legislature closed its 79th session on May 30. Since the governor has until June 19 to sign or veto bills on his desk, it will take a few more weeks to thoroughly understand the impact of this session on UNT.

Scholarship honors a friend's commitment to promoting diversity

Sue Young, administrative assistant for the Faculty Senate, gave her friend and fellow employee, Mary Finley, assistant director of the University Union, a one-of-a-kind gift this year — a scholarship in Finley's name to honor her years of commitment to diversity in the university community.

Parking permits for 2005-06 now for sale

Faculty and staff can renew their parking permits for the 2005-06 academic year by intercampus mail through Aug. 12. Information materials and registration forms detailing the permit renewal process have been sent to full-time faculty and staff members. The information includes instructions for using the nine-month payroll deduction option to purchase parking permits and a pre-tax salary reduction payment option.

Committee continues to examine Responsibility Center Management

A 27-member committee led by the finance and business affairs office has been working since December to design a model and implementation strategy for Responsibility Center Management that could work at UNT.

Work dress codes relax as summer temperatures go up

UNT employees can expect building temperatures to become warmer as summer draws near.

Richard Rafes, senior vice president for administration, says UNT will set thermostats at 75 degrees in most university buildings to conserve energy. Thermostats will be turned off after hours and on weekends in unoccupied buildings with no special needs such as temperature-sensitive research or equipment.

Wet paint — Rachel Black, a graduate student in the School of Visual Arts, helps paint a mural in the new international Terminal D at DFW Airport. The mural, designed by artist Sol LeWitt, is part of the airport's $6 million art program. DFW Airport expects to open the terminal later this summer.

Gift to help promote Czech music, culture

The UNT College of Music accepted a $100,000 gift in May from the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. The gift will help fund an annual residency to promote Czech music and culture throughout the state.

Denton County Transportation Authority approves rail line favored by UNT

The Denton County Transportation Authority, which was created in 2001 to develop a public transportation plan for Denton County, approved the rail alignment favored by the university and  university system as the locally preferred route for future development during its public meeting May 26.

Mean Green 2005 season ticket packages for sale

Faculty and staff once again have the opportunity to purchase UNT football season tickets for half price, as season tickets are now on sale for $40 each. The price for the general public is $80.

Faculty Senate elects officers for 2005-06

The Faculty Senate elected officers for the 2005-06 academic year during its May 12 meeting. Frances Van Tassell, associate professor of teacher education and administration, was re-elected to serve a second term as senate chair, and Grant Miles, associate professor of management, was re-elected to serve as vice chair. Samuel Atkinson, professor of biological sciences, was elected secretary. The new terms begin Sept. 1.
