Troutts with Reid Ferring

Geology trail is the newest addition to EESAT complex

The Preston, Grant and Savannah Troutt Texas Geology Trail was dedicated June 6 at the Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building. The trail was made possible by a $35,000 gift from Kenny Troutt and Lisa Troutt ('85) as well as contributions of construction materials from various companies.

Designed by Reid Ferring, professor and chair of the Department of Geography, the trail provides an outdoor geological classroom for people of all ages. Texas rocks from the Archean Period, which began 4.5 billion years ago, to the current Quaternary Period, which began almost 2 million years ago, are placed in a historic time line along the trail. In addition to the rocks, dioramas display animals, fossils and plants that relate to each age.

"Dr. Ferring's concept of interaction with nature is a powerful learning tool," says Lisa Troutt. "We were happy to assist in a project that will benefit people of all ages for many years to come."
