12 schools use UNT Coliseum for commencement exercises During the past few weeks, seniors from 12 area high schools received their high school diplomas in the UNT Coliseum. According to Steve Selby, Coliseum director, high schools opt to hold their graduations at UNT because of location and convenience. "In most high schools, the only places large enough to hold a big event like graduation are football fields," Selby says. "And spring weather in Texas is not conducive to holding an event outside." Rental fees to reserve the coliseum go back into the building's budget, Selby says. Commencement ceremonies began last month with Plano East High School in the Coliseum May 23. Decatur High School students graduated on May 24, and Sanger High School students graduated May 25. Ceremonies for the Denton schools, Ryan and Denton high schools, were held May 26. Newman-Smith, R.L. Turner and Lewisville high schools, all of Lewisville, had commencement ceremonies May 27. Students from The Colony High School and Flower Mound's Marcus High School graduated May 28, and Northwest High School of Justin had its commencement ceremony May 29. Lake Dallas High School had its commencement June 3. In addition to high school students, men and women from the DeVry Institute, a career-oriented college, will graduate June 24. All commencement ceremonies were in the Coliseum, except the DeVry Institute graduation, which will be in the Main Auditorium. At least 500 people were expected to attend each graduation.
