UNT chancellor hits the books

When UNT System Chancellor Lee Jackson accepted his current position as chancellor over the UNT System a year ago, he anticipated being an enterprise leader but never expected to find himself a student in a classroom.

The chancellor, along with several other faculty and staff members, is enrolled in the level I Spanish class being offered exclusively for faculty and staff members during the Summer I session.

"In 1987, I came back from a diplomatic trip to Argentina and Uruguay with a new interest in Latin American culture," Jackson says. "So, the following year my New Year's resolution included a pledge to learn Spanish."

Fifteen years later, the class has given Jackson an opportunity to carry out the promise he made to himself.

"This class was so convenient that when I saw the notice I was without any more excuses," he says. Jackson is enjoying the class and hopes it will inspire him to take more Spanish courses in the future. The beginning Spanish class, taught by Angelica Mendoza, student assistant in the Comprehensive Language Program, requires no previous knowledge of the language.

In addition to the level I Spanish class, the Comprehensive Language Program offers a level II Spanish class and English as a second language classes for non-English speaking people of all nationalities. Contact Melanie Betterson, human resources assistant, at (940) 565-4246 for information about the classes.
