Farewell events planned
to honor Hurleys This summer holds about a dozen farewell events to honor UNT System Chancellor Alfred F. Hurley and his wife, Joanna. Earlier this year, Hurley announced his plans to retire at the end of August. Hurley says he and his wife are "thrilled" by the coming events planned in their honor and by the receptions that already have taken place. "These events remind Joanna and me how fortunate we are to have been here this long," he says. "These 22 years have been a very rewarding experience." One of the foremost events scheduled is a farewell reception from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28 in the Gateway Center, where members of the UNT and Denton communities will have the opportunity to honor the couple. All UNT faculty, staff and students are invited to attend. "We hope that everyone whom we have not seen at the previous events will stop by if they can do so," Hurley says. "It will help give us a chance to thank as many people as possible for their tremendous work over the years." In addition, the UNT System Board of Regents has planned an invitation-only farewell gala Aug. 24 on the Denton campus. "The board is excited about this event because it's an opportunity for the UNT System to honor Chancellor and Mrs. Hurley and all that they have accomplished in the last 22 years," says Bobby Ray, board of regents chair. "At the same time it gives us an opportunity to showcase our system and its flagship campus to our external constituencies." Other farewell events have been organized by the President's Council; Retired Instructors, Personnel and Spouses (RIPS); the UNT Foundation; the UNT Health Science Center at Fort Worth; and the UNT System Center at Dallas. The Hurleys have already been honored by the Chief Executives Round-table; the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science; Friends of the UNT Libraries; and the Eagle Student Services Center.
