This fall marks the fifth year UNT staff and faculty volunteers will help incoming freshmen make the transition from home life to college living with Sunday Fun Day. The event is Aug. 18 this year, and organizers hope the volunteer numbers this fall will top last year's total of almost 450. Maureen Clouse, residential and judicial affairs coordinator, says the day provides a chance for all kinds of people to get better acquainted with one another. "This program introduces our new students to the UNT family and helps them to make connections with the faculty and staff that are already here," says Clouse. "You would be surprised to see how many students follow up with people they meet on Sunday Fun Day. It is also a great way for faculty and staff to get to know many of their colleagues on campus." The volunteers a mix of student organization members, faculty, staff and family members of UNT community members help new students with a variety of tasks, including helping them check into the residence halls, moving them into their new rooms, serving food and drinks, answering questions and providing information. To sign up, e-mail Clouse at moe@hsl.admin.unt.edu. A week before Sunday Fun Day, volunteers will receive an assigned location where they are to report on Aug. 18. Volunteers are being asked to work a two-hour shift either from 10 a.m. to noon or from noon to 2 p.m. All volunteers receive a free T-shirt for lending a helping hand. Clouse says sign-up is beginning early this year so that assignments can be made earlier and volunteers will receive their T-shirts on time.
