Herman L. Totten, Regents Professor and associate dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences, will become the president of the Texas Library Association in April 2001. The Texas Library Association, a nonprofit organization that promotes library service in Texas, named Totten president-elect at the organization's annual conference last month in Houston. Totten will serve as president-elect for one year and will then become president of the 7,200-member organization. Totten's third and final year on the executive board will be spent as the immediate past president, advising the new president. During his presidency in 2001-02, the Texas Library Association will celebrate its 100th anniversary. Texas has the largest state library association in the United States. Totten came to UNT in 1977 as an associate dean of the School of Library and Information Sciences. He returned to teaching in 1983 and taught for 14 years before returning to his position as associate dean of the school in 1997. In addition to his work as associate dean, Totten also works with the university's distance learning program and the UNT System Center in Dallas. Last year, Totten received the Outstanding Teacher Award from the Association of Library and Information Science Educators. "It's quite an honor to be respected in the field, and I am very proud of this honor," Totten says.
