Students win national awards

Four students have received prestigious national honors.

Debra McIlvain of Decatur, a senior anthropology major, has received a three-year National Science Foundation Fellowship to continue her research of ancient Clovis camps. The three-year fellowship will provide her with a stipend of approximately $16,200 a year and an annual cost-of-education allowance of $10,500 for graduate study, amounting to more than $80,000.

Approximately 900 students receive NSF fellowships each year. Selection is based on the student's academic record, past research experience, Graduate Record Examination test scores and proposed plan of future research.

Additionally, three students from the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science are among 309 students in the nation this year to receive Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships, considered among the country's most prestigious scholarships awarded to students planning careers in mathematics, science and engineering. Students are chosen on the basis of their scientific research, grade point averages and other achievements.

Priyanka Agarwal of Fort Worth, Leian Chen of Plano and Marcos Flores of Laredo received the scholarships, which provide up to $7,500 each year to cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board.
