Faculty Senate elects officers for the 2004-05 academic year
The Faculty Senate elected officers for the 2004-05 academic year during its May 12 meeting. Frances Van Tassell, associate professor of teacher education and administration and senate vice chair, was elected chair; Grant Miles, associate professor of management, was elected vice chair; and Marcia Staff, professor of finance, insurance, real estate and law, was elected secretary for a second term. The new terms begin July 1.
In other business, Faculty Senate members:
- Approved a report from the Workload Committee about the balance of teaching and research duties, non-instructional summer spending, and the effect of enrollment fluctuations on teaching loads.
- Approved a report from the Oversight Committee of the University Core Curriculum concerning the evaluation of the progress of courses going through the core curriculum process.
- Approved a written report from the Writing Committee about the 2004 President's Writing Awards.
- Approved a report from the Visiting Lecture Seminar Series Committee regarding the activities of the committee during the 2003-04 academic year and concern over the committee's lack of an annual budget.
- Approved, in a 16-to-12-vote, a report from the UNT Library Committee concerning proposed changes to the formula used to determine funding for the library's purchase of monographs and journals.
- Approved a written report from the Faculty Research Committee about the evaluation of existing resources and identification of additional resources to support faculty applying for external research grants, the development of actions to increase research funding, the development of the UNT Research Park, and the development of policies and procedures needed to secure research funding for the university.
- Approved a report from the University Scholarship Committee regarding university scholarships and grants-in-aid policy, the process of screening candidates and awarding scholarships, and possibilities for increasing scholarship funds.
- Approved a report from the Committee on Committees regarding vacancies for Faculty Senate committees.
- Approved a report from the University Curriculum Committee about requests for new courses; the addition and deletion of degrees, majors, professional fields, concentrations, options, minors and academic units; changes in programs and academic units; and deletion of courses from the core curriculum.
- Heard an Executive Committee report from Van Tassell about faculty salary increases, a developmental leave timeline, faculty to student ratio, centers of excellence, UNT's national reputation, reprimands and promotions, summer budget and funding, and promotion and tenure decisions.
