Regents change admissions policy, extend president's contract
Actions
at the May 22 meeting of the UNT System Board of Regents included approval
of a 2004 admissions policy that continues to automatically admit students
in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class but would
require a minimum SAT and ACT score for students in the next 15 percent.

Gallery welcomes staff arts and crafts show this month
Organizers
of the "It's Your Thing" UNT staff arts and crafts
show are seeking entries from any staff member with an interesting
craft or hobby to share.

to conserve energy and to dress to beat the heat this summer
Spring
is shifting into summer, and with it, the temperature outside is creeping
up. UNT employees have no doubt noticed temperatures inside campus
buildings have also become warmer than in the recent past.

a presentation of designs for the buildings that comprise Phase 1 of
the Eagle Point Campus by visiting www.untsystem.unt.edu/eaglepointcampus.
The presentation includes the concept plan introduced in February; the
current site development plan; design plans for the athletic center
and dining facility; and the preliminary design plans for Victory Hall,
a residence hall.
Staff
Council representatives elected
Seventeen
UNT staff members were elected or re-elected last month to serve on
the 2003-04 Staff Council. Representatives will serve two-year terms
beginning Sept. 1.
Making
sure that Texas trees provide shade this summer
Trees are one of Texas' most precious natural resources, especially during the summer when the spreading canopy provides welcome relief from the blistering sun. But one of the state's most dominant shaders, the post oak, may die from insufficient water absorption at any time of the year, not just during dry summers.
Faculty
Senate elects officers for 2003-04
The Faculty Senate elected officers for the 2003-04 academic year during its May 14 meeting. Lou Pelton, associate professor of marketing and former senate vice chair, was elected chair; Frances Van Tassell, associate professor of teacher education and administration and former senate secretary, was elected vice chair; and Marcia Staff, professor of finance, insurance, real estate and law, was elected secretary. The new terms begin July 1.
Faculty
recognized at Honors Day event
Seven
UNT faculty members were recognized during the Honors Day celebration
in April for their contributions to the university. Each spring, UNT honors
its students for academic excellence and presents faculty with student-awarded
honors for service to the UNT community and high-quality teaching.

Council working to find more effective ways to communicate with staff
I
have had the honor of serving on the Staff Council as a representative
for the university community all four years of the council's existence,
including this past year as the chair. Reflecting back on these years,
it is clear that communication is the key to our success.
