Regents change admissions policy, extend president's contract

Actions at the May 22 meeting of the UNT System Board of Regents included approval of a 2004 admissions policy that continues to automatically admit students in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class but would require a minimum SAT and ACT score for students in the next 15 percent.

Staff Council representatives elected

Seventeen UNT staff members were elected or re-elected last month to serve on the 2003-04 Staff Council. Representatives will serve two-year terms beginning Sept. 1.

Trees are one of Texas' most precious natural resources, especially during the summer when the spreading canopy provides welcome relief from the blistering sun. But one of the state's most dominant shaders, the post oak, may die from insufficient water absorption at any time of the year, not just during dry summers.

Faculty Senate elects officers for 2003-04

The Faculty Senate elected officers for the 2003-04 academic year during its May 14 meeting. Lou Pelton, associate professor of marketing and former senate vice chair, was elected chair; Frances Van Tassell, associate professor of teacher education and administration and former senate secretary, was elected vice chair; and Marcia Staff, professor of finance, insurance, real estate and law, was elected secretary. The new terms begin July 1.

I have had the honor of serving on the Staff Council as a representative for the university community all four years of the council's existence, including this past year as the chair. Reflecting back on these years, it is clear that communication is the key to our success.
