Million-dollar touring bus provides VIPs with star treatment

Shaquille O'Neal and Clarence Thomas each own one. On occasion, President Bush, Clint Eastwood and Muhammad Ali have used them.

And now, thanks to the vision and generosity of Dallas businessman Bill Winspear, supporters and friends of UNT will have the opportunity to travel to Denton like celebrities in the university's new customized recreational vehicle.

"UNT is still a very under-appreciated cultural asset of metropolitan Dallas, in my opinion," Winspear says. "And I find that's because there is a general feeling amongst people that going to UNT events is quite a trek and a hassle. So, I thought getting this bus was a nice idea to make the trip more pleasant."

The bus, a 45-foot Prevost conversion shell customized by American Carriage, is outfitted with all the comforts of home, including: leather furniture for 15 passengers, a wet bar with full-size refrigerator, a 42-inch plasma TV, in-motion satellite system, and a five-disc CD/DVD surround sound system.

Dave Shrader, UNT vice president for development, believes the effort will provide an elegant way to bring people to the university.

"UNT already invites major donors to cultural, academic and athletic events on campus in appreciation of their generosity. Now, this thank you comes with chauffeur service, adding a touch of class and convenience to the university's donor appreciation efforts," Shrader says.

While the bus may be flush with luxury, Winspear believes its best asset is functionality.

"The fact that there is a moderate number of very comfortable chairs that will allow people to sit back, have a drink, listen to music and enjoy conversation while on their way to an evening out is by far the best feature," Winspear says.

On June 3 the bus's first passengers rode from Dallas to Denton to enjoy an intimate dinner and performance by pianist Vladimir Viardo. Now, Shrader and the UNT Office of Development will begin booking the bus for future events universitywide.
