Financial Services Center

Two years ago, Congress deregulated the financial services industry, allowing single financial institutions like banks and investment groups to offer multiple services ranging from investment consulting to insurance. Previously, these institutions were unable to stray from their respective fields.

As large insurance companies begin offering banking services and banks start to offer insurance and investment options, the industry will need a new kind of professional to manage these expanded institutions and lead the financial services industry through the deregulation transition.

The UNT Financial Services Center was created to address these needs. Operating out of the Department of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Law in the UNT College of Business Administration, the center supports a new undergraduate degree in financial services that covers insurance, banking, investments, financial planning and real estate. It is also developing continuing and executive education for financial services professionals.

UNT faculty members, working through the center, will offer consulting to aid groups in expanding services, meeting state and federal regulations and planning business strategies. A number of other community service and pro bono projects are also in the planning stages. Contributors to the center include the Angell Financial Group, Robert A. Nickell, State Farm Companies Foundation and William Rigg Co. These donors receive several benefits for their partnership with the center, including access to top UNT graduates.
