Pohl named to lead the Sun Belt Conference for two-year term

Sun Belt Conference logoUNT President Norval Pohl has been named president of the Sun Belt Conference, the athletic conference for UNT and 12 other universities. His two-year appointment is effective this fall.

Pohl previously served as vice president of the conference, completing UNT System Chancellor Alfred F. Hurley's unexpired term.

"I look forward to serving as president of the Sun Belt. My appointment indicates that the conference recognizes UNT's commitment to athletics," Pohl says.

As conference president, he will preside at conference and executive committee meetings, which bring together faculty athletic representatives, athletic directors, coaches and university administrators to discuss graduation rates, the eligibility of student athletes, requirements for Division I-A membership and other topics.

Expansion of the Sun Belt Conference, which UNT joined in 2001 after playing in the Big West Conference, is among topics expected to be discussed during Pohl's tenure as president.
