A day for beauty — Sandy Burke, computer systems manager, was one of more than 275 volunteers who took part in the Great UNT Campus Beautification and Cleanup Day last year.

UNT plans second annual beautification day

For UNT, spring cleaning means the second annual Great UNT Campus Beautification and Cleanup Day. This event, in conjunction with the national Great American Cleanup observance, is designed to build community spirit by bringing UNT students, faculty, staff and administrators together to enhance the appearance of campus.

Volunteers will prepare and plant flowerbeds, plant trees, paint walls and handrails, and clean up campus areas. Participants also will collect magazines for nursing homes and cell phones for women's shelters.

This year, the event will be from 9 a.m. to noon April 3. No pre-registration is required – volunteers are invited to arrive at parking lot 9 (west of Terrill Hall along Avenue C), ready to work. Long pants, closed-toe shoes or boots, gloves and hats are recommended. The event is expected to bring in 400 volunteers, who will be treated to a cookout at noon. In the event of rainy weather, the campus cleanup will be postponed until April 17.

For more information, contact Andy Schoolmaster, associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of geography, at (940) 565-2348 or andrew@unt.edu.
