Regents approve engineering college, property purchase resolutions

Approval of resolutions to secure state authorizations for a UNT College of Engineering and to allow the university to pursue the purchase of the Liberty Christian School property were highlights of the winter UNT System Board of Regents meeting at the UNT System Center at Dallas on Feb. 22.

Governor appoints UNT alumni Beatty, Smith as new regents

Waxahachie Mayor Charles "Chuck" Beatty and Plano business leader C. Dan Smith joined the UNT System Board of Regents following announcement of their appointments Feb. 22 by Gov. Rick Perry. The two, both graduates of UNT, will serve terms that expire May 22, 2005.

Dialing all UNT alumni

Thirty UNT students introduce themselves to 750 alumni on an average night during UNT's fund-raising phonathon. Sponsored by the Office of Development, the phonathon happens twice annually in the spring and fall yet a donor-friendly system ensures alumni are not asked to contribute more than once a year.

Chancellor search advisory committee formed

magnifying glassFifteen people have been appointed to a committee to advise the UNT System Board of Regents as the regents search for a new system chancellor.

UNT System Chancellor Alfred F. Hurley announced in January that he plans to step down from his position this fall.

The search advisory committee will review applications received for the chancellor position and make candidate recommendations to the regents, who will make the final selection to fill the position. The committee held its first meeting in February.

UNT students named Rotary Scholarship winnersRotary International logo

Six UNT students have received Rotary Scholarships for study abroad during the 2002-03 academic year.

Rotary Scholarships are provided by each of the 521 districts of Rotary International, an organization for business and professional men and women that focuses on providing humanitarian service, encouraging high ethical standards in all vocations and building goodwill and peace worldwide. A Rotary district consists of about 45 Rotary clubs.

Women's History Month lecture to focus on women, United Nations

Traditional studies of international relations and history focusing on men contribute to the image of the United Nations as an organization of unfulfilled promises and failed peace negotiations, according to Judith P. Zinsser.woman with shield and sword

For women, however, the United Nations is a positive force, she believes. Zinsser, associate professor of history at Miami (Ohio) University, will give a free lecture at UNT March 28 as part of UNT's observance of Women's History Month. She will discuss how women activists gained recognition of women's rights as distinct from men's through the United Nations Decade for Women.
