Staff awards presented at President's Staff Sack Lunch

Several staff members were recognized at the President's Staff Sack Lunch May 8.

Outstanding staff awards were presented to Ron Chrisman, UNT Press; Christopher Cofer, Computing Center; Charlie Fox, Risk Management and Environmental Services; Toni Nelson, Public Administration; and Marsha Pettit, Finance and Business Affairs.

Outstanding department awards went to the Office of New Student Orientation and Mentoring Programs, the UNT Police Department K-9 Unit and the Office of Compliance.

Trent Petrie, professor of psychology, and Kathryn McCauley, Student Legal Services, were honored with Eagle Partner Awards for their efforts to retain students.

Soaring Eagles, nominated by their peers for outstanding customer service, were also recognized. In a new feature of the staff sack lunch event beginning with this meeting, a Soaring Eagle was chosen from a drawing to be honored. The name of Alana Skoric, Computing Center, was drawn, and a book she selects from a pre-approved list will be donated to the UNT library in her name.

UNT President Norval Pohl spoke about the UNT budget for the next biennium. Steve Miller, assistant vice president of human resources, spoke about changes to employee health benefits before Pohl addressed questions submitted by staff members on various topics. Questions concerned fears that jobs would be cut due to budget constraints, whether the athletics department would share equally in budget cuts, the possibility of creating a child day care facility at the Liberty Christian School property, parking fees and activities to recognize Asian Pacific Heritage Month.

Also new to the staff sack lunch program were drawings for donated prizes from the names of all retirement-eligible staff members. Meredith Butler, Facilities Planning, won a gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse and Johnny Carino's restaurants; James Morris Martin, Libraries, won a gift certificate to Denton Florist; Donald McNabb, Structural Services, and Patricia Reese, Libraries, won gift certificates to Applebees; Tonya Enis, Purchasing and Payment Services, won a gift certificate to Candy Haven; and Richard Wayne Hultsman, Repair and Remodel Services, won a free "D" parking permit for the 2003-04 academic year.
