A.Y. GUNTER, Regents Professor of philosophy and religion studies,
gave a talk, "Philosophical Psychology and the Teaching of Philosophy,"
at the Central PATRICK PLUSCHT, associate director of the Center for Distributed Learning, received the "Outstanding Commitment to TxDLA by an Individual" award at the Texas Distance Learning Association conference, April 3 in Fort Worth. The award was in recognition of his contributions to the association over the past five years, which included serving as a board member and member of the Executive Partnership Council, implementing an online evaluation system for the annual conferences and serving as program chair for this year's conference. A prose poem sequence by DARYL SCROGGINS, lecturer in English, was published in Quarter After Eight, vol. 8, spring 2002. The work is titled "The Scold's Romance: A Story in Prose Poems." BERNARD L. WEINSTEIN, professor of applied economics and director of the University Center for Economic Development and Research, was a featured speaker on the topic of "Libraries and Community Economic Development" at the Centennial Conference of the Texas Library Association, April 24 in Dallas.
State JOHN BAEN, professor of finance, insurance, real estate and law, is quoted in an article about a change in leadership at Ross Perot Jr.'s Hillwood Development Corp. in the April 25 Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Baen is also featured in a May 5 Fort Worth Star-Telegram article on whether neighborhoods, especially gated communities, are isolating residents so much that they are identifying with subdivisions instead of their hometowns. PHIL DIEBEL, UNT System vice chancellor for finance and UNT vice president for finance and business affairs, discusses how the oil-based economy helped to keep tuition costs down in Texas in the May 2 Dallas Morning News. Texas tuition costs are currently among the nation's fastest rising. UNT President NORVAL POHL and BILL GRUBBS, professor and chair of the Department of Engineering Technology, discuss the establishment of a College of Engineering at North Texas in the May 6 Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
