The master's and doctoral degree programs are ranked 16th among the top 20 Education Specialties: Counseling/Personnel Services and Programs in the United States. No other Texas institution was ranked in the top 20. The UNT program has been ranked in the top 20 for five straight years. The rankings are reported on the U.S. News and World Report's web site at www.usnews.com, which includes the magazine's annual guide to the best graduate schools in the country. The ranking is based on experts' opinions about the quality of a program and statistical indicators that describe the strength of a school's faculty, its research and the performance of students both as they enter and leave the program. U.S. News and World Report gathered indicator and opinion data by surveying more than 1,000 programs and 9,000 academics and other professionals in the fall of 2001. "The ranking is a reflection of very active faculty who hold national offices and provide significant research in the profession," says Michael Altekruse, chair of the Department of Counseling, Development and Higher Education. The program, which was one of the first nationally accredited programs, has been accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs since 1978. UNT's counseling education program has twice been named the most outstanding program in the United States by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. About 260 master's-level students and 50 doctoral students are enrolled in the program.
