Faculty, staff pay raises head agenda at UNT System Board of Regents meeting todaydollar sign

Approval of the proposed university budget for the 2002-03 academic year will be one of the major items on the agenda when the UNT System Board of Regents meets on campus today.

For the new fiscal year, beginning Sept. 1 and covering the second year of the current biennium, the administration is recommending a $408.15 million budget that includes an increase of approximately $61.45 million over this year's budget.

UNT establishes doctoral degree in audiologyear drum

Health-care professionals who specialize in diagnosing and providing therapy for people with hearing disorders will soon have another outlet for advanced education.

The UNT Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences will offer a doctor of audiology degree (Au.D.) beginning in Fall 2002.

UNT counselor education program top in Texas

UNT's graduate program in counseling is the top Texas program, as recently ranked by U.S. News and World Report.window to the mind

The master's and doctoral degree programs are ranked 16th among the top 20 Education Specialties: Counseling/Personnel Services and Programs in the United States.

No other Texas institution was ranked in the top 20.

Staff Council adopts spot for beautification program

The UNT Staff Council held its regular bi-monthly meeting May 1. Council members heard reports from several individuals and discussed items on the meeting's agenda. They were unable to take action on the items for lack of a quorum.

Council member Bob Killam, who serves on the UNT Beautification Committee, reported on the committee's April 19 meeting and the Adopt-A-Spot program.

New UNT employees who primarily speak Spanish now have more opportunities to learn about the university and personnel policies, thanks to monthly orientation sessions given in Spanish.

Symposium aids Texas' higher education future

giant appleOn May 2, during the UNT Higher Education Symposium, College of Education and Bill J. Priest Community College faculty did their part to respond to Closing the Gaps the state's strategy to improve higher education participation, success, excellence and research. The event gave prospective and current students an opportunity to meet with higher education faculty and learn about UNT's education program as well as the Closing the Gaps program.

UNT Officer Shane Menz and Hektor

On the trail: UNT police department adds K-9 unit to patrol force

The newest member of UNT's police force finds four legs and a bent for scent detection are his best assets in protecting the campus.

Hektor, a 1-year-old black German Shepherd from Slovakia, joined the UNT public safety squad in early May after completing six weeks of intensive training with his handler, Officer Shane Menz. Hektor previously completed 12 weeks of preliminary training.

A partnership between the UNT College of Education and Paul Quinn College in southern Dallas opens the way for the establishment of a federally funded Science and Math (SAM) Teacher Academy at the UNT System Center at Dallas.
