approve admissions policy modifications
Actions
at the May 4 meeting of the UNT System Board of Regents included approval
of a 2002 admissions policy that continues support for automatic acceptance
to the top 25 percent of Texas high school graduates. Biological sciences professor Art Goven was named interim vice provost for research by the UNT System Board of Regents during the board's May 4 meeting.
Spring in Texas means bluebonnets, warm days and, unfortunately, unwelcome menaces in the sky tornadoes. An average
of 118 tornadoes touch down in Texas each year, with more than half occurring
in April, May and June, according to the Texas Almanac. McTee

Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has awarded Cindy McTee, Regents
Professor of music, a 2001 fellowship.
TAMS
student selected to participate in Presidential Classroom Julie Whitis, a student at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, has been selected to participate in this summer's Presidential Classroom Science, Technology and Public Policy Program. Open to high school juniors and seniors with a grade point average of "B" or better, the program gives students a firsthand look at the political responses to change brought about by scientific advances. Fork Ed Parents
of children in the second through eighth grades have until June 1 to register
their children for the 2001 Elm Fork Explorer's Camp. The program offers
a variety of opportunities, organized into eight half-day (8 a.m. to noon)
weeklong camps and one full-day option. All camps are held at the Elm
Fork Education Center and the Environmental Education, Science and Technology
Building at UNT.
Herman
L. Totten, Regents Professor and associate dean in the School of Library
and Information Sciences, recently was named the winner of the 2001 Melvil
Dewey Medal from the American Library Association. Totten will accept
the national award June 19 at the ALA annual conference in San Francisco.
Staff awards presented at sack lunch Several
staff members were recognized at the President's Staff Sack Lunch May
9. Outstanding staff awards were presented to Tricia Banfield, College
of Arts and Sciences; Terri Miller, Student Accounting and University
Cashiering Services; Doug Renner, Coliseum; and Jim Webb, Payroll.
