Groundbreaking set for University Gateway Center

UNT continues to implement its ambitious master plan for campus growth by breaking ground for the construction of a new state-funded $17.5 million University Gateway Center on May 25. The university community is invited.

Regents will join Chancellor and President Alfred F. Hurley and his wife, Joanna, to host the event at 11:30 a.m. at the former site of the Advancement Center at the corner of Avenue E and Eagle Drive.

Others taking part in the groundbreaking will include representatives from Corgan Associates Inc., the architectural firm that designed the project, and Austin Commercial, the construction manager.

Hurley notes that the ceremony is a vital step in the university's master planning for the first decade of the 21st century.

"UNT is expected to attract as many as 35,000 students as early as the year 2010. To prepare for that expectation, we adopted a master plan that will provide appropriate facilities to accommodate our growth," he explains.

The 116,000-square-foot complex is slated for completion by late 2001. It will serve as the primary gateway for visitors to the UNT campus and for people attending special events.

Planners believe the University Gateway Center will enhance efforts to recruit new students and benefit undergraduate, graduate, professional and continuing education programs in UNT's colleges and schools.
