'Stream team' strives for clean water

The "Stream Team," a group of City of Denton employees and UNT faculty members and students, recently unveiled a water quality project that studies the cleanliness of the water flowing into Lake Lewisville - a major drinking water source for Denton and Dallas counties.

Professor helps in dating important fossilized skulls

Reid Ferring, professor of geology, played a critical role in dating archeological findings that suggest the first humans migrated out of Africa much earlier than was previously believed. An article co-written by Ferring about the significance of the discovery appeared in the May 12 issue of the journal Science.

SOS provides options

Universally, the letters "SOS" are recognized as a call for aid and assistance. This spring, UNT adopted "SOS" to identify its new intervention program, which presents options to students who feel that withdrawing from school may be the best way to resolve their difficulties.

UNT's Division of Student Development created its Seeking Options & Solutions (SOS) service to provide relief in the form of referrals, identification of practical options and development of workable solutions to students who are considering dropping out of the university.

Survey: 'Sexiest' ad leaves something to imagination

To UNT students, the sexiest ad running is one that features invisible people.

 Tom Reichert, assistant professor of journalism, asked  225 students to identify advertisements that they  consider to be sexy and to describe what makes them  that way.

Dallas Museum of Art showcases Lawrence

The Dallas Museum of Art's exhibition, Concentrations 36: Annette Lawrence, features a gallery-scaled installation by North Texas artist and assistant professor of visual arts, Annette Lawrence.

The exhibition is part of the DMA's ongoing series featuring the work of emerging artists. Concentrations 36: Annette Lawrence is on view at the DMA until Aug. 6 in the Northeast Quadrant Gallery. Admission is free. The museum is located in the Arts District of downtown Dallas between St. Paul and Harwood streets.

Program teaches volunteer management

When Tena Burley decided to return to college after 13 years as a stay-at-home mom, she wasn't sure what she should study until she heard about UNT's Volunteer and Community Resource Management Certification Program.

"I had done a lot of volunteering, mostly with the PTA, church and with theater guilds. It felt like a natural progression to learn how to manage volunteers," Burley says. "The motivation for paid employees to work is often for the money, but volunteers have a huge range of reasons why they are volunteering. Managing them is very different from managing employees."
