UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSION FEE FOR STUDENTS APPLYING FOR FALL 2002 AND THEREAFTER

PERTINENT FACTS

UNT began charging the $25 undergraduate admission application fee during the 1980’s to offset rising administrative expense and reduce the number of casual applicants. Over the last several years we have experienced increasing numbers of undergraduate applicants and absorbed other complexities associated with statewide admissions standards such as the Texas Common Application, Texas Grant opportunities based on high school credentials, and new applicant tracking/reporting requirements stemming from the last two legislative sessions. With the approved increase in the fee, the first objective is to use the additional revenue to bolster staff and operational funds in undergraduate admissions.

A second objective will be to expand the continuing student definition to "once a student, always a student" for re-enrollment purposes. Students who stop out for an extended period of time will not have to reapply for admission which will, therefore, facilitate re-recruitment of these students to complete their degree at UNT. This strategy will greatly improve public relations. It is the former student who frequently complains about the fee to re-apply, especially if they have not attended another institution and have no new academic credentials to evaluate. Rather than re-apply, students who have not enrolled within a 12-month period will have the opportunity to quickly update their student records and re-enroll. This efficiency will benefit approximately 1,300 students annually.

Other public four-year university application fees for Fall 2001 were examined and revealed the following:

University of Texas at Austin $50

Texas A&M University $50

University of Houston $40

Texas Tech University $40

RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS

The President, with the concurrence of the Chancellor, recommends that the Board of Regents authorize the University to increase the undergraduate admission application fee from $25 to $40 for students who apply for Fall 2002 and thereafter. In addition, it is recommended that the Board of Regents authorize the University to not charge an undergraduate admission application fee to former students as described above.
