PERTINENT FACTS

Dr. James C. Scott is a nationally recognized musician who has performed flute concerts and recitals throughout the United States. He holds the DMA from Peabody Conservatory. He taught at Rutgers University (1967-1994) and at Indiana University (1994-1997) before becoming Director of the School of Music at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana in 1997. While at Indiana University, he served as an associate dean. Dr. Scott has also been active in the National Association of Schools of Music, serving as a presenter at national conferences in 1994, 1995, and 1999, as well as serving on accreditation site-visit teams. Dr. Scott has an outstanding reputation as a teacher and administrator. At the University of Illinois he oversaw a major renovation project, hired ten new faculty members, and helped annual giving to increase by 35 percent. His service with distinction in some of the finest music programs in the country has prepared him well to serve as Dean of the College of Music at the University of North Texas.

Dr. Arthur J. Goven is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of North Texas and a well-known researcher in the field of Ecotoxicology. A distinguished member of the faculty, he has served as Vice Chair and Chair of the Faculty Senate, has been a member of many important University committees, and most recently served for three years as Executive Assistant to the Chancellor. With Dr. Rollie Schafer leaving his post as Vice Provost for Research at the end of summer 2001 to begin modified service in the Department of Biological Sciences, Dr. Goven has consented to assume the research office duties on an interim basis, effective September 1, 2001, while a search is conducted next academic year for a new Vice Provost for Research. He will also serve half time in the Research office during summer 2001, as Special Assistant to the Vide Provost for Research to begin learning his role, accept specific duties and responsibilities and help Dr. Schafer and the Research office with the transition to new leadership, as well as to assist in maintaining the momentum of the all-important research agenda of the University.

Mr. Richard A. Villarreal has been successful as a coach, football administrator, athletic department fundraiser and private businessman. For the past three years, Mr. Villarreal has served as Associate Athletic Director at the University of Southern Mississippi. At USM, he spearheaded a fundraising effort that resulted in the commitment of over eight million dollars and resulted in the current construction of a new athletic center, new baseball clubhouse, and a women’s softball stadium. He also initiated the Circle of Champions, a group of donors that pledged at least $100,000 each. The Golden Eagle football team advanced to four consecutive bowl games, the men’s basketball team tied for the Conference USE regular season title and advanced to the NIT this season, and the women’s softball program advanced to the NCAA College World Series each of the past two seasons. Before moving into administration at USM, Mr. Villarreal was a football coach and football administrator from 1988-1997. He served as Director of Football Operations and Assistant Athletic Director at TCU from 1995- 1997. He served in several different roles at Louisiana State University, starting as tight ends coach and moving up to Director of Football Operations and Recruiting Coordinator. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in coaching and sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi. He has been involved in many community organizations during his business and athletic administrative career. Mr. Villarreal brings exceptionally relevant experience to the Athletic Director position at UNT.

Mr. John H. Jones is highly recognized for his ability as a basketball recruiter, as a coach and as a molder of young men. A former four-year letterman at Louisiana State University, Mr. Jones has spent the last 17 seasons coaching in the collegiate ranks. He served this past year as the assistant basketball coach at the University of Alabama. He has previously coached for three seasons at Memphis, including two seasons as associate head coach and one as the Tigers’ interim head coach during the 1999-2000 season. Coaching for 14 seasons at his alma mater, LSU, he has served in the capacities of assistant coach, administrative assistant and associate head coach from 1984-97. He was the Tigers’ associate head coach under Dale Brown from 1994-97. During his tenure at LSU, Jones recruited and coached College Player of the Year Shaquille O’Neal, two-time All-American Chris Jackson and former national high school player of the year Randy Livingston. As a recruiter, he helped secure LSU’s 1993 recruiting class which was ranked No.1 in the nation. And in 1997 at Memphis, Mr. Jones helped accumulate a JUCO recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 nationally and was the cornerstone of an overall class that was ranked seventh. Seven of Jones’ former recruits have gone on to play in the NBA. Mr. Jones received his Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University in 1985.

RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOARD OF REGENTS

The President recommends, with the concurrence of the Chancellor, that the Board of Regents approve the appointment as indicated below:

*His full-time salary for academic year 2001-2002 will reflect any raise that he will receive as a faculty member for that year.
