The UNT Coliseum began hosting graduation ceremonies for 18 area high schools on May 18, and those ceremonies continue through June 5. Steve Selby, Coliseum director, suggests that students, faculty and staff steer clear of the campus's west side prior to, during and following the ceremonies due to heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic. "If you have things to do on this side of campus, you should try to do them at another time," Selby says. "It's going to be a madhouse over here." Selby says hosting the ceremonies provides a needed service for area schools and also benefits the university.
"Holding graduations in the Coliseum assures the schools of an indoor, air-conditioned venue that seats up to 9,000 people," Selby says. "The ceremonies also provide revenue for the Coliseum budget and bring potential students onto campus. The exposure for the university campus is great." Graduates and their guests are expected to begin entering the Coliseum about an hour to an hour-and-a-half prior to each commencement. During the ceremonies for the larger high schools, North Texas Boulevard will be closed. Heaviest attendance is expected for the commencements of Allen, Ryan, Denton, Lewisville, Carrollton and Coppell high schools. Heavy traffic is anticipated on North Texas Boulevard, Avenue B, Maple, Hickory, Highland and Eagle prior to and following those commencements.
