Regents act on three tenure appeals

During its quarterly meeting May 13, the UNT System Board of Regents took action on three tenure appeal cases.

Acting on a motion from Regent Robert Nickell, the board voted unanimously to uphold the University Tenure Committee's recommendation that the appeal filed by Roman Stemprok, assistant professor of engineering technology, be denied. Stemprok's appeal is now concluded and the university has not awarded him tenure.

In the tenure appeal cases of Edward Lopez, assistant professor of economics, and Dan Peak, associate professor of information technology and decision sciences, the board voted 8-1 to disagree with the University Tenure Committee's recommendation to award tenure.

The board concluded that due process and established procedures were followed and the applicants were treated fairly. It returned both cases to the committee, asking for a response to its conclusion no later than two weeks before the Board of Regents meeting Aug. 18-19 so that the board can resolve the appeals at that time.
