UNT Student Recreation Center wins national honor

The UNT Student Recreation Center was recently recognized as an Outstanding Indoor/Outdoor Facility by the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association. The award was presented at the NIRSA annual conference on April 19 in Albuquerque, N.M.

The center was recognized based on criteria set forth by NIRSA, including facility functionality, architectural design and aesthetics, and unique features and characteristics.

The $31.5 million facility opened in Fall 2003 and features a 14,500-square-foot weight room; multi-purpose courts for basketball, volleyball and badminton; aerobics rooms; an outdoor pursuits center; an indoor track; lap pool and leisure pool; a soccer court; and an indoor climbing wall.

"The Student Recreation Center greatly affects the quality of life on the UNT campus by adding to the positive UNT experience," says Sue Delmark, assistant dean and director of recreational sports at the university. "By providing a wonderful place for students to socialize, relieve stress and meet new people, the rec center helps to develop the whole student."
