The Faculty Senate approved three resolutions during its regular meeting April 9. The first supports implementation of timeline suggestions recommended by the University Review Committee regarding expedition of the grievance and appeals process. The second resolution, drafted by the Texas Council of Faculty Senates, urges Texas lawmakers to avoid defining the concept of "doing more with less" as paying faculty less. The senate also approved a resolution supporting the position of provost as second in command within the UNT organizational structure. In other business, the senate tabled a proposal to remove the word "faculty" from the name of the faculty development leave policy. The proposal suggested that removal of the word would more accurately reflect the spirit of the policy; however, discussion indicated there was concern regarding who the policy would affect if the word was removed. The issue will be discussed by the senate executive committee. The senate approved a report presented by Joneel Harris, associate vice president for enrollment management, on behalf of the Academic Affairs Committee. The report calls for a change to undergraduate admissions standards for the Fall 2004 academic year and will be presented to the UNT System Board of Regents for approval this month. Currently, UNT automatically accepts high school students who graduated in the top 25 percent of their classes. The proposal would limit automatic admission to students in the top 10 percent of their classes.
