Pohl: 2003-04 budget still unclear, commitments to quality education remain

In anticipation of a state revenue shortfall that could affect UNT's 2003-04 budget, UNT President Norval Pohl says the university will delay its budget process until more is known about changes to legislative appropriations.

A living memorial — UNT President Norval Pohl and his wife, Barbikay, stand with the tree that was dedicated April 25 in memory of Pohl's mother, Alice C. Pohl Hayes. The tree and plaque bearing Pohl Hayes' name are located between the Hurley Administration Building and the University Union.  


Commencement is May 10

Around 1,300 students are set to graduate during spring commencement ceremonies May 10. Thomas J. Engibous, chair, president and chief executive officer of Texas Instruments Inc., will be the featured speaker at the general convocation at noon in the UNT Coliseum.

Thomas J. Engibous is chair of the board of directors, president and chief executive officer of Texas Instruments Inc., one of the world's leading electronics companies.

DISD superintendent to speak at TAMS graduation

Mike Moses, superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District, will be the featured speaker as the 2,000th Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science student graduates this month.

Approximately 180 students are expected to receive TAMS diplomas at this year's commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. May 9 in the UNT Auditorium Building.

A different sign of spring — Standing tall among the Texas bluebonnets is one of several new signs leading to the UNT Dallas Campus, also known as the UNT System Center. The signs, erected in March, are located on Interstate 20 near Hampton Road in southern Dallas. The UNT Dallas Campus offers junior-, senior- and graduate-level courses.  




UNT System continues plans for public law school for North Texas region

The UNT System announced last month that it still intends to propose creation of a public law school in the North Texas region despite Texas Wesleyan University's decision to keep its law school.

Faculty Senate chair reflects on a year full of changes


It has certainly been an interesting academic year at UNT. From the approximate 8 percent growth in student enrollment last fall to the anticipated 12 percent cut in the upcoming budget, this has been the year for records a year I am sure we will all remember for a long time to come.

World Fest 2003 — TAMS' Fellowship for the Advancement of Cultural Education of Students hosted its annual World Fest event April 25, where attendees sampled ethnic food, music and entertainment. UCM earns 10 awards for writing, publications, marketing materials

University Communications and Marketing received 10 awards for materials produced by the department at the District IV Council for Advancement and Support of Education conference April 7 in Little Rock, Ark.

Faculty Senate approves resolutions, admissions policy change report

The Faculty Senate approved three resolutions during its regular meeting April 9.

The first supports implementation of timeline suggestions recommended by the University Review Committee regarding expedition of the grievance and appeals process.

UNT to host National Youth Sports Program

For the sixth straight year, Denton and Tarrant county preteens and teens will visit UNT this summer to combine basic instruction of organized sports with classes on alcohol and drug abuse prevention, math and science, higher education, nutrition and other topics.

Mary Robinson, (below) the current U.N. high commissioner for human rights and former president of Ireland, presented a lecture on campus April 25 as part of UNT's Fine Arts Series.
