James BattistaJAMES BATTISTA and J. DONALD SMITH,J. Donald Smith assistant professors of political science, and graduate student WENDA SHEARD presented "Committee Jurisdictions, Specificity and Policy Outcomes in the States" at the Public Choice Society conference, March 21-24 in San Diego.

HARRIET COHEN, assistant professor and director of the social work program, will represent the National Association of Social Workers-Texas on the Aging Policy Resource Group of the Texas Department of Aging for a two-year period. The group assists the department in identifying and prioritizing aging issues and recommending policy solutions across state government.Theresa Flowers

TRACEY M. GAU, lecturer in English, acted as session chair and panelist coordinator for the "Shakespeare in Popular Culture" sessions at the Southwest/Texas Popular Culture Association conference, Feb. 13-17 in Albuquerque, N.M.

PETE A.Y. GUNTER, Regents Professor of philosophy and religion studies, presented "Leopold's Land Ethic, Texas and the New Environmentalism" at Southern Methodist University, April 9 in Dallas.   

JOHN HIPPLE, senior staff counselor at the Counseling and Testing Center, was selected to serve on the Wellness Committee of the International Bluegrass Music Association. He gave two presentations dealing with career preparation for middle school students at the annual Texas Education Agency Middle School Counselors Conference, Feb. 25-26 in Austin, and he participated in the KERA Preparedness Advisory Committee focus group, which discussed the reactions of families, children and the community to the Sept. 11 disasters, Feb. 28 in Dallas.

SEONJOU KANG, assistant professor of political science, presented "A Seal of Approval or a Seal of Doom? An Empirical Study of IMF Programs and Behavioral Patterns of Commercial Lenders in Developing Countries" at the International Studies Association conference, March 25-27 in New Orleans.

KIMI KING, associate professor of political science, presented "Bringing Her Out of the Shadows: An Empirical Analysis of Sentences in Rape Cases Before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia" at the Comparative Judicial Research Group meeting, March 18-20 in Fort Worth. An article by King and JAMES MEERNIK, associate professor of political science, was published in International Criminal Law Review, vol. 1. The article is titled "The Effectiveness of International Law and the ICTY: Preliminary Results of an Empirical Study."

JAMES MEERNIK, associate professor of political science, presented "Equality of Arms? The Individual vs. the International Community in War Crimes Tribunals" at the Comparative Judicial Research Group meeting, March 18-20 in Fort Worth.

LESLIE PALMER, associate professor of English, read his poetry, including "Flaubert's Poetic Friend Climbs," "Coleridge, Cactus, Fish and Boy," " Poised: A Tension of Forces" and "A Valentine Recipe" at the Brickhaus, Feb. 15 in Denton. With his wife, Joyce Palmer, he read an article titled "By the Sea With Johnson and Boswell: An Excursion Into the Physical, Spiritual and Allegorical Possibilities in'The Rocks of Scotland for the Strand'" at the South Central Society for 18th-Century Studies meeting, Feb. 21 at South Padre Island.

STEVEN POE, associate professor of political science, presented "The Decision to Repress: An Integrative Theoretical Approach to the Literature on Human Rights and Repression" at the Scientific Study of Human Rights workshop, March 22-27 in Turin, Italy. Poe was co-organizer of the workshop.

SAM SAULS, associate professor of radio, television and film, presented "Protecting Your Asset: An Analysis of Selected Administrative Actions Depicting Trends in the Control of Campus Radio Stations" at the Broadcast Education Association's 47th annual convention, April 5 in Las Vegas. Sauls also assumed the role of chair of the Student Media Advisors Division at the convention.

ALEXANDER TAN, assistant professor of political science, presented "China-Taiwan Issue and Its Implication to Japan" at the China's Rise in Power and the Implications for Japan Conference, March 20 in Dallas. Tan and graduate student CHRISTINA SCHNEIDER presented "Financial Liberalization and Reform Under Duress: The Politics of Hard Times in Taiwan" at the International Studies Association conference, March 24-27 in New Orleans. An article by Tan and graduate student TSUNG-CHI YU was published in Pacific Focus, vol.15, fall 2001. The article is titled "Taiwan's National Security: A Political Economy Perspective."

UNT and courses taught by IAN PARBERRY, professor of computer sciences, are mentioned in the March 1 Electronic Gaming Monthly in an article on schools that offer computer game-related studies.

BOB BLAND, professor and chair of the Department of Public Administration, comments on the city-business relationship of incorporated mobile home parks with liquor stores in the April 14 Dallas Morning News.

MICHAEL GIBSON, assistant professor of visual arts; DONALD LOUIS, project director for the Department of Rehabilitation, Social Work and Addictions; and CELIA WILLIAMSON, associate professor and chair of the Department of Rehabilitation, Social Work and Addictions, discuss in the April 22 Fort Worth Star-Telegram their creation of a no-holds-barred approach to discourage 11-year-olds from using tobacco, a CD-ROM called unFILTERed: Exposing the Truth Behind a Pack of Lies. The CD-ROM has been distributed to more than 1,600 middle schools in Texas.

RON HASTY, professor of marketing and logistics and director of the Texas Logistics Education Foundation Center for Logistics Education and Research, discusses the impact of retail dot-com disasters on logistics in the April 21 Dallas Morning News.
