The Center for Environmental Philosophy

The Center for Environmental Philosophy was created by the board of directors of Environmental Philosophy Inc., a nonprofit corporation of the state of New Mexico, in 1989. It is the product of a number of activities begun with the creation in 1978 of the journal Environmental Ethics. The journal, the first devoted to research in environmental philosophy, was founded by Eugene C. Hargrove.

The center and the journal moved to UNT in 1990 to be part of the university's environmental philosophy program, which is now the leading program of its kind nationally and internationally.

The primary activities of the center include publishing Environmental Ethics; reprinting important books through the center's book series Environmental Ethics Books; training and promoting research in environmental ethics through workshops and conferences; promoting graduate education in the field of environmental ethics and postdoctoral research; and providing professional development in cooperation with the Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies at UNT.

Last year the center held a conference on "Environmental Philosophy and the Earth Sciences," which was cosponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey, and sponsored a documentary photography exhibit on environmental justice in Denton and Houston. The center has regularly sponsored workshops for nature interpreters in past. More recently it has held workshops for environmental professionals and environmental scientists and for university professors wishing to develop courses in environmental ethics.

Jan Dickson is the center's executive director. Hargrove is the center's director and continues as editor of Environmental Ethics and chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies.
