Faculty, staff recognized at Honors
Day celebration Several UNT faculty and staff members were recognized on April 27 during the traditional Honors Day celebration for their contributions to the university. Each spring, UNT honors its students, faculty and staff for academic excellence, service to the UNT community and high-quality teaching. The President's Award honors individuals or groups whose activities have brought significant recognition to the university. This year's recipient was Virginia Wheeless, associate vice president for planning, UNT System associate vice chancellor for strategic planning and interim executive director of the UNT System Center at Dallas. Four faculty members were chosen as Student Association Honor Professors Roy Busby, professor of journalism; Gloria Cox, associate professor of political science; Adrian Richard Lewis, assistant professor of history; and Tom Preston, professor of English; and Margie Tieslau, associate professor of economics. Gladys Crawford, assistant professor of biological sciences, received the 'Fessor Graham Award, the highest honor given by the student body. Named for the late Professor Floyd Graham, the award is presented to a faculty member for outstanding and unselfish service to students. NT Community Awards were presented to two faculty members and one staff member for outstanding service to the university community. Award recipients were Mark Mortensen, assistant professor of technology and cognition; Richard Tas, associate professor of merchandising and hospitality management; and Sharon Leake, assistant director of business services. A Special Recognition award was presented to Mickey McCarter, lecturer in the School of Visual Arts, for her dedication to students.
