UNT to help improve Internet2

UNT is now connected to the effort to build tomorrow's Internet through Internet2, a second-generation web created strictly for educational purposes and experimentation.

The Internet2 connection is established and now UNT will join more than 60 leading companies and government agencies and more than 180 universities to develop the new and improved applications and technology that will be used to power the Internet in years to come.

Internet1, the original system currently used by the general public, initially was built for educational purposes and research. Due to its commercial growth and increased traffic, universities and colleges can no longer use it for experimentation and development of new software. Internet2 is designed not to replace the current Internet, but to be a testing ground for future software and expansion for the web.

It's also a place for scientists around the world to share ideas and connect through videoconferencing. The speed of Internet2 is vastly superior to the current Internet, and the system is capable of running software that the Internet can't sustain.

Students, staff and faculty have access to Internet2. Already faculty members like Armin Mikler, assistant professor of computer sciences, are using the connection to experiment with networking.

Anyone who would like to perform research using Internet2 should contact Maurice Leatherbury, senior director of academic computing, at 565-3854. More information is available at www.internet2.edu.
