Nelson Hartman appointed Cathy Nelson Hartman, documents librarian at the University of North Texas, is the fourth Texan in history to be appointed to the Federal Depository Library Council. In the 15-member committee, Nelson Hartman will share in all council duties such as advising the Public Printer and Government Printing Office on public access issues and deciding what services libraries must provide for their communities. She begins her three-year term Oct. 1. Nelson Hartman's focus is the preservation of electronic government documents. She says that rapid advances in technology create problems with preserving and offering access to electronic government records and that solutions must be found to ensure that the electronic record is truly an archival medium. In her role as a documents librarian, Nelson Hartman coordinates the electronic resources program for the only Federal Depository Library in Denton County, located in the Willis Library. The 100-year-old Federal Depository Library Program provides the general public with free, government information through more than 1,300 member libraries around the country. The Federal Depository Library Council develops policies for the depository libraries.
