Discover UNT draws almost 1,000 to see university's updated look
Nearly 1,000 people attended the Discover UNT event April 27 in the University Union, where university and system administrators unveiled the university's updated brand and discussed the future as outlined in the academic plan.

About 2,500 expected to graduate during commencement May 14
UNT will confer degrees to approximately 2,000 undergraduates and 500 graduate students during spring graduation ceremonies May 14.

About the commencement speaker
This spring's commencement speaker, Alphonso Jackson, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the nation's 13th secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in March 2004. He served as deputy secretary of HUD from 2001 to 2004. HUD's core mission is to provide affordable housing, promote community and economic development, and enforce fair housing laws.

UNT to present honorary doctoral degree to capital campaign leader
UNT will award William O. Hunt, alumnus and longtime supporter of the university, an honorary doctor of humane letters degree at the May 14 spring commencement ceremony.

Growth is key in state Closing the Gaps plan
Enrollment at UNT has grown steadily during the last seven years, jumping from nearly 25,000 students to more than 31,000 students, at a rate that exceeded the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's projections for UNT.

TAMS commencement scheduled for May 13
Approximately 162 students are expected to receive Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science diplomas at this year's commencement ceremony May 13. The event begins at 7 p.m. in the UNT Auditorium Building.
John Quintanilla, associate professor of mathematics, will be the featured speaker. Quintanilla, who teaches precalculus and calculus to TAMS students, has supported TAMS by participating in the academy's summer orientation program every year since 1997.

North Texas ‘Hold 'em' is 2005 Homecoming theme
Almost 1,600 ballots were cast to choose the 2005 Homecoming theme in a recent online election.

Faculty Senate honors retiring director of international studies and programs
The UNT Faculty Senate honored Thomas Hoemeke, executive director of international studies and programs since 1979, with a resolution during the group's April 13 meeting. Hoemeke will retire July 31 after 38 years with the university.

Students earn several national scholarships
It's been a winning season for national scholars at UNT. One senior received a $24,000 scholarship, and four Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science students received a combined $50,000 in national scholarships this semester.

UNT awards Learning Enhancement grants
Several UNT programs have money coming their way. Howard Johnson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, has allocated Learning Enhancement Grant Awards for 2004-05, giving a total of $150,000 to 11 programs. The highest amount, $32,000, went to the College of Business Administration, for Developing the Online MBA Core: A Prelude to Program Offering in 2005-2006. For a complete award list, click here.
