Karen Hughes, Kinky Friedman headline first UNT System Book and Author Luncheon

Karen Hughes, one of President George W. Bush's closest advisers, and Kinky Friedman, Texas songwriter and musician turned mystery novelist, spoke and signed copies of their new best sellers at the first UNT System Book and Author Luncheon April 16 at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas.

UNT Chancellor Lee Jackson says all proceeds from this initial event will benefit the UNT System.

In Ten Minutes From Normal, Hughes' latest book (released last month by Viking), she reflects on her experiences in working closely with President Bush in the White House. It was during that time that she was described as "the most powerful woman ever to serve in the White House" and "as close to indispensable as any recent presidential aide."

Friedman, who also is a regular columnist for Texas Monthly, is promoting The Prisoner of Vandam Street – his 17th novel. Fans of his protagonist, the fictional detective Kinky Friedman, include President Bush, former President Bill Clinton, country singer Dwight Yoakam and radio personality Don Imus.

A UNT student jazz combo performed before, during and after the luncheon.
