AWARD OF HONORARY DEGREE

PERTINENT FACTS

From time to time, this University has awarded honorary doctoral degrees to individuals who have distinguished themselves in their professions and/or in their service to this region, state and nation.

It is proposed that one such person, Mr. William W. Winspear, be awarded the Honorary Degree, Doctor of Performing Arts. As with all such degrees, approval from the UNT faculty, through the University Committee of the Faculty Senate, has been received.

Mr. Winspear has demonstrated remarkably generous leadership of arts and civic organizations in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. He has served as the founding Co-Chair of Friends of Channel 13; as President of the Texas Arts Alliance; and President, Chairman of the Board, and member of the Executive Committee of the Dallas Opera; as President, Chairman of the Board of Dallas Civic Music, as Chairman of the Finance Committee for St. Mark’s School of Dallas; and, Chairman of the Sustaining Fund of the Dallas Symphony.

He and his wife, Margot, have been remarkably generous with their time and funds in support of this University, especially the College of Music. Their most recent gift made possible the completion of the Lyric Theatre in the Murchison Performing Arts Center. Their ongoing support of students through the Winspear Scholars Program has made it possible for some of this country’s most talented students to study and thrive at this institution. At this writing, Mr. Winspear is helping to ensure the success of our planned Capital Campaign through his chairmanship of the College of Music’s part of the campaign effort.

In short, Mr. Winspear stands as a model of achievement and commitment worthy of this proposed recognition.
